One Health Hub – Punjab

One Health Hub – Punjab
One World, One Health, One Medicine

The mandate of PPHA acknowledges the 'Health for all' paradigm and asserts the need to coordinate efforts to provide comprehensive primary care and curative health services. This includes management of the social determinants of health including the animal health and environment. The One Health Hub- Punjab will be housed in the

Division of Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response at PPHA. This unit will function as a focal point for the provincial coordination of one health agenda nationally, regionally and globally. It will work towards establishing an institutional mechanism for animal and environmental health data reading for event-based early warnings as part of an integrated disease surveillance and response system. It will serve as a critical resource for stakeholder participation, evidence generation, and knowledge-based multi-sectoral intervention planning and will also provide technical assistance to bring sectoral harmonies for overarching objectives. PPHA is at an ideal pedestal to lead introduction of one health mandate in the current and future health policy structure of Punjab. The role of PPHA as a coordinating or expert technical advisory body provides a channel for environmental health and animal health components to be imbued in the mainstream horizontal and vertical health programmes in Punjab. PPHA will help increase the cross-cutting one health capacity and develop a provincial network to synergistically link information on environmentally related diseases, animal diseases, human exposures, and related hazards. Collected network data would help health officials in responding to, and eventually reducing diseases in the population that may be caused or aggravated by ‘One Health’ approach promoting enhanced multi-sector coordination is critical to reducing the risk of new disease emergence and minimizing its potential impact. PPHA intends to forge ‘one health’ alliances across public health, agriculture, environment, economic growth and education and other provincial departments.
